Charles Chaney

Lifelong Wallace County resident Charles Lee Chaney, 89, passed away on Monday, January 6, 2020 at his home in Sharon Springs, KS surrounded by family.

Charles was born on January 27, 1930 at home north of Weskan, KS to Virgil Marvin and Fern Dean (Swartz) Chaney.  He was the oldest of six children.  He attended school in Weskan, and graduated from Weskan High School in 1948.

On July 20, 1950, Charles married Margaret Virginia Basgall in Sharon Springs.  To this union, six children, Darletta, Kathleen, Rodene, Dane, Teresa and Denise were born.

They moved several times during the first few years of marriage before making Sharon Springs their permanent home in 1957, where they continued to live and raise 6 children.  He worked at the Sharon Springs Power Plant at night and was a janitor at the Wallace County Courthouse during the day.   In 1972, Charles and his wife Margaret bought the hardware store and named it C & M Hardware until they sold it in 1980.  He worked from his home until he retired in 2014.

He was an avid card player especially pinochle and pitch, which he loved doing with his family and friends.   He played pitch in the Kansas Pitch Association for many years.  You could always find him teaching his grandchildren how to play.  He also enjoyed various trips with his kids and grandkids, which he treasured for years.  Even after retirement, whenever a neighbor or friend needed any plumbing advice or equipment Charles loved being able to lend a hand.

Charles had memberships in the Masonic Lodge of Sharon Springs, the Knights of Columbus and was a member of the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Sharon Springs.

Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife Margaret, his son Dane Chaney, a grandson Marc Graham, two sisters Wilma Arnberger and Norma Arnberger and one brother Leonard Chaney.

He is survived by his five children; Darletta (Dennis) Collins of Sharon Springs, KS, Kathy (Gary) Robinson of Humboldt, KS, Rodene (Gary) Doty of Stafford, KS, Teresa (Roger) Havel of Pueblo, CO, and Denise (Wayne) Weyerman of Idalia, CO.  His is also survived by one brother Elmer (Glenna) Chaney of Sharon Springs, KS, one sister Wanda (Harry) Keister of St. Francis, KS, 15 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren.

Charles will be forever missed by his family and friends, and all whose lives he touched.
